Doris Ray resides in Fraser Lake in North Central B.C. Her first creative effort, a humour column titled “Sense and Nonsense,” began appearing in local newspapers in 1974. It was followed by “The Good Old Days,” compiled from interviews with area pioneers. Later she helped develop and publish a local history book, “Deeper Roots and Greener Valleys.” In 1999 Doris's award winning book “The Ghosts Behind Him” chronicling her family’s devastating experiences with her son Bruce’s schizophrenia, was published by Caitlin Press. Her recent novel "Common Threads," loosely based upon the secretive life of her grandmother who married a man from China, was published by Libros Libertad. Doris has self-published several volumes of poetry and short fiction. She has facilitated creative writing workshops and family-education programs on the subject of mental illness. Recently she has developed a computerized slide-show presentation featuring archival and other historical photographs relevant to her latest book publication. The slide show - in conjunction with short readings and audience interaction – generally focuses on a number of historical events and social aspects outlined in the book.
